A riot involving thousands of Penn State football fans erupted last night at the announcement their long-term head coach Joe Paterno would be sacked with 'immediate effect' for his role in the sex scandal which has rocked the university.

The college's Board of Trustees also forced the resignation of president Graham Spanier after allegations that for years the school's former football defence coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abused young boys.

Mr Paterno, 84, had said he would retire at the end of the 2011 season but the trustees stepped in to tell the legendary coach he will never take charge of another game following the allegations of a cover up.

Assistant coach Tom Bradley has been named interim football coach while Penn State provost, Rodney Erickson will become interim president.

Readers pack their shelves at home with 80 books they haven’t read to appear more intelligent, a study revealed today.

The research found that 70 per cent of books in the average household’s bookcase remain unopened and a third of people admit they have no intention of reading them.

Four in ten also confessed that some works of literature are purely there for display purposes. More here.

These skull-ful creations are turning heads across the globe.

Russian artist Dimitri Tsykalov uses an axe, saw and electrical drill to carve human skulls out of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The 48-year-old then uses a scalpel, pincers and cotton wool pads to add and smooth remarkable detail with 'surgical precision'. More here!

Now there’s an interesting trend in China’s film and television industry: more and more time-travel themed dramas are made and aired. In these time-travel based TV plays, usually the protagonist is from the modern time and for some reasons and via some means, travels through time and all the way back to the ancient China where he/she will constantly experience the "culture shock" but gradually get used to it and eventually develop a romance in that era. Though obviously the Chinese audience is found of this genre of shows, the country’s authority -General Bureau of Radio, Film and Television, to be exact, is not happy about this trend and calls a halt to the making of this type of drama.
